Hello Welcome to Thousands Sails Pictures

Thousand Sails Pictures is a Hong Kong-based film production company founded by Hing Weng Eric TSANG and LAU Kok Rui. Thousand Sails gathers independent filmmakers with unique voices and visions of the future. We produce original works as well as facilitating co-production. Through contemporary ways of story-telling we strive to foster dialogue between peoples and cultures. As the Chinese poetry goes: “By the side of a vessel sunk, a thousand sails are floating past”, we embrace every trial and believe it is necessary for achieving our goals. Originating from making shorts, Thousand Sails is now exploring both fiction and non-fiction, from features to series. Our recent short A Thousand Sails was premiered at Sundance Film Festival in 2020. Previous works were screened by film festivals from Busan, Clermont-Ferrand, Bali, Toronto, Los Angeles, New York, Rome, Regensburg, Bangkok, Lahore, Kathmandu, Muar, Taipei and Beijing.

Hing Weng Eric TSANG is a Hong Kong-based filmmaker and artist, and author of Tales of Honey: A Collection of Interviews with Post-80s Directors from the Greater China (2015). Graduated from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, he was invited to be a part-time lecturer at University of Hong Kong. Eric's short film A Thousand Sails (2019) was selected by Sundance Film Festival, Busan International Short Film Festival and won the 2019 Sundance Film Festival Hong Kong Short Film Competition Jury Award. Another short film The Umbrella (2018) earned several awards including the Edward Snowden Award at the 17th Festival International Signes de Nuit - Paris and Fresh Wave Award in Hong Kong. Eric’s experimental dance video Meeting with the Monk (2018) was exhibited in the National Art Museum of China. His television documentaries can also be found at National Geographic Channel, ViuTV and Radio Television Hong Kong. His experimental Television documentary series ​Nocturne Op.13​ (2016) ranked no.1 in 2016 Television Programme Appreciation Index Survey (4th stage) in Hong Kong. Funded by The 5th First Feature Film Initiative, Eric is now preparing for his debut feature film ​The Dinner.
